There is a flexible protected areas system in Lithuania, which allows adding new areas to it comply with the European Union Directive requirements. The establishment of the microreserves will ensure protection of biodiversity of the small areas in Lithuania (Latvia case). At the present time protected areas covers 15, 3% of Lithuania territory. The aim of this work consists of the analysis of the protected areas system and the evaluation of it‘s condition in Lithuania. As the case there was selected Birzai regional park. There were analysing 36 annual reports of the state service for protected areas directions in purpose to evaluate system condition of the protected areas. As the conclusions of these annual reports are inaccurate it is necessary to improve the evaluation system itself. With reference to the Birzai regional park case there is paying much attention to the problems arised. The protection of the protected areas would be more efficient while solving these problems as well as the establishment of the Birzai geopark would extend this area and the protection of all karst regions will be more effective. The public opinion research in Birzai shows that residents are very interested in Birzai regional park but they have too little information about it and they can‘t to evaluate the possibilies of the development. The activities of the State service for protected areas should ensure further increasement of protected areas as well as the preparation of planning documents for the all protected areas in the future.
