Abstract

To pursue the above–mentioned main aim of this study, these tasks were set: – to discuss the environmental impact of municipal waste landfills; – to analyze legal acts regulating establishment and activities of municipal waste dumps; – to assess the system of municipal waste management within Vilnius city and region; – to analyze the environmental impact of Karijotiškės and Kazotiškės municipal waste landfills within Vilnius region. The object of this study: the environmental impact of waste landfills. The methods used in this study include: – the document analysis of reports and articles: the results of scientific research, the reports of public and private institutions, treatises, internet information were analyzed; – the survey of official documents, legal acts: documents produced by EU and The Government of the Republic of Lithuania were analyzed. Landfill - a site for disposing waste where the waste is dumped on the ground. According to the hierarchy of waste management, disposal of waste to waste dump ought to be chosen only if there are no other possibilities for recycling. However, in Lithuania 90% of averagely 1300 thousand tones of waste were disposed in landfills from 2000 through 2004. Of late years, Lithuania having become the member of EU, a great progress has been made in consolidating the legal basis for waste management by implementing EU requirements for waste management and seeking to enhance the effectiveness of waste management system. Recently the exploitation of Karijotiškės landfills is being reduced. This object will be closed and recultivated due to the ready project of closedown. The new landfill within Vilniaus region will be established in Kazokiškės. According to plans, the maintenance of landfill, monitoring, environmental control will be actively imposed both in closed and newly established landfills.
