This collective monography raises and presents a complex analysis of current economic modernisation problems and state economic policy priorities that are being implemented in the context of globalisation and the internationalisation of economic and social development processes, in the creation of a knowledge-based society, and as essential qualitative changes in the economic and cultural space of the European Union are underway. The modernisation of an economy is the essential factor behind increasing the welfare and level of social wellbeing of contemporary society, as well as being responsible for maintaining political stability. We can say that the modernisation of an economy will always be one of the most important priorities of state economic policy, demanding special attention both from society at large, as well as from economic and management specialists. The modernisation of an economy, taken as a complex process of economic change, features a huge range of problems. This range of problems is, by and large, determined by factors having a major impact on economic development, such as globalisation, the creation of a knowledge-based society and the resulting lifestyle models, social behaviour stereotypes and processes concerning the pervasion of personal values. This means that problems arising from the modernisation of an economy must be analysed and resolved taking into account globalisation, and in the context of processes arising from the creation of a knowledge-based society. It is also of note, that the current potential and perspectives in the modernisation of an economy are to a great extent influenced by European Union development and expansion processes. It is clearly apparent that the potential and perspectives for economic modernisation of those countries that belong to the European Union must be analysed in a common European Union development and expansion context.
