Current situation in Lithuanian rural areas is among the topical and extremely controversial social issues. During the last seven decades our countryside had experience, which is almost incommensurable with the situation in any another field of economical and social life. Weak possibilities of rural inhabitants for investments, small purchasing power and inadequate professional background, which is mostly inapplicable for modern labour market are the biggest obstacles for further rural economical development. Globalization and Lithuania's joining the European Union has a radical impact on the role of modern rural areas. For this reason it is necessary to disclose substantial changes of rural areas, which have to be analyzed by public institutions involved in administration of rural development. The latest data on demographical and economical situation, also on changes of rural infrastructure and life quality of rural residents is presented.
