Rural tourism is being organized developed in Europe more than 40 years. However there is no universally accepted rural tourism definition. Some authors identify it with tourism in underpopulated territories, other authors emphasize activities offered in villages. There are authors who define rural tourism as state of mind and also activity, others - like tourists expedient recreational activity in countryside and temporal habitation in homesteads. Summarizing various definitions we can maintain that rural tourism is an activity that meets these requirements: it is taking place in rural area, it is also of a small scale, exploits local resources and has local features. Natural and cultural resources create good conditions to produce attractive tourist products in Lithuania. Natural resources, landscape complexes of individual regions, national and regional parks, lakes, rivers, forests, extant homesteads, rich flora and fauna make a great recreational environment. It is supplemented with numerous historical, cultural and ethnographical elements. Rural tourism as business is officially developed in Lithuania only since 1998. In 2004, 361 homesteads, which could receive 5442 tourists at the same time, provided rural tourism services. There are 519 such homesteads at present time. According to natural, cultural and human resources about 7000 countrymen could go into business of rural tourism. Therefore supply potential of rural tourism is high. Still a number of problems stop rapider development of rural tourism business: insufficiently developed public infrastructure of tourism, lack of financial resources, psychological ill-preparation, lack of knowledge, foreign languages barrier and so on.
