Not only parents' relationships directly affect the adaptation of their children, they may influence other domains of family functioning which in turn may direct the development of the children to psychopathology. Several processes which can explain the link between parental relationship and parenting are mentioned. The spillover theory states that the affect or behaviour from one system transfers to another. Another process might be the third factor which stands above the parental relationship and parenting and influences them both. The personality of parents is proposed to be the possible factor. There are several drawbacks in current family functioning research. While examining parental relationship the broad concept of marital satisfaction is used omitting other possible variables (emotional availability, commitment etc.) of parental interaction. Parents' relationship evaluation very often is limited to inerparental conflicts investigation. Although the reciprocal relationship between parental relationship and parenting is acknowledged little research had investigated both direction influences. Other challenges in investigating the complex relation between marital satisfaction, parenting and children adaptation would be to find out whether relationship between parents relationship and parenting is the same for mothers and fathers and for sons and daughters; to define how marital satisfaction influences the parenting and through that children problems during different stages of family life; to find out what is the children's contribution to the relationship between a relationship and parenting; to evaluate how other variable like parent's personality influences the relation between marital satisfaction and parenting.
