Population savings become an important part of investment resources of countries and thus ensure their economic growth and competitiveness on the world market. They present an important economic category playing a special role on the macro- and micro-levels. First, they form one of the main internal financial resources being turned into credits and investments, which serve as the determinant factors of the economic growth of a country. Second, savings reduce the money supply, so they ensure favourable conditions for curbing inflation and serve as an additional source for credit provision and development of business. Third, investing activities of population further growth of medium-size and small business. Fourth, savings are indicative of the population living standards and characteristic of the state of household economy. The article presents analysis of the savings practices of the Lithuanian population and their impact on the economic situation in the country.
