The article deals with the historical circumstances of development and adaption of the Code of local Laws of the Baltic provinces, its sources and the main legal characteristics. The document in one of the Lithuanian legal sources which received insufficient treatment in intenwar Lithuania. The Baltic region (Livland, Estland and Kurland) was ruled by the law which in force of the historical circumstances was oriented towards the German legal doctrine. Owing to its particularism (varied in different areas and cities of the region) the system was rather complicated. When the region fell under the Russian rule in the late 18th c., the law was officially recognized by the Russian government, and was codified separately when the remodeling of the imperial law was undertaken in the 19th c. The article reveals the difficulties which the authors of the Code had to face. The main emphasis of the work is laid on Book 3 of the Code which came into effect in 1864 and dealt with civil law. Its sources, structure, specifics of the text are considered. In interwar Lithuania this book of the Code was in force on the territory which under tsarist rule was part of the Kurland province.
