The study of leisure (free time) is one of the most important issues to be studied by sociology. Leisure as a sociological category requires thorough analysis of its nature, content and, accordingly, the specific expression of the internal framework and specific forms. During leisure activities, as well as at work and during studies, personality is formed; there is communion with the values of public life and culture. In cases there is lack of free time it is impossible to satisfy the cultural consumers. This article aims at describing not only the theoretical nature of leisure, but also at studies of the rural youth recreation situation in the Vilnius region. As the results of the sociological research show, activity for rural people in the field of leisure is determined by a number of factors: the importance of their marital status, children in the family, occupation, skill level and education level. Most of the free time for rural youth is passive forms of activities in the home environment - young people watch television, listen to recorded music, read different books or newspapers and magazines. Effective use of one's leisure time is most important. Irrational use may lead to negative phenomena. One of the problems of leisure for rural young people is inaccessibility of different cultural events, fairs, traditional folk crafts, concerts, performances etc. Another important issue is lack of financial means in order to spend their free time in a meaningful and attractive way. According to the authors, each locality has its own peculiarities in the organization of free time due to differences in socio-economic conditions, trends in culture, human needs, etc.
