Academic research is among the most debated issues in the area of higher education management. Studies realized be specialists (Korhonen, Tainio and Wallenius: 2001, Armstrong and Lilien, 2002; Vincent-Lancrin, 2006) reflect the fact that academic research is quite difficult to be assessed and measured. This paper focuses on academic research characteristics, how is it assessed and why the quality of this process is both sensitive and difficult to measure. A special attention will be devoted to the Academy of Economic Studies, underlying the particularities that academic research in the largest economic university from Romania has. Paper conclusions are consistent with the results that other studies reveal. New insights from the case study emphasize the danger of adaptation to higher imposed standards.
