Abstract (en)
The development of musical theatres in the Baltic states was highly influenced by Western European and Russian artists. One of them was the great Russian singer Fiodor Ivanovich Shaliapin (1873-1938), who worked directly with Latvian and Lithuanian opera companies and sang in the opera houses of Riga and Kaunas. In one of his interviews Shaliapin claimed that "there are only three opera houses worth mentioning: those of Sofia, Riga and Kaunas".
