The paper analyses the role of parents in enhancing pupils’ motivation to learn. Particular risk of the loss of motivation to learn arises in the fifth grade, as this period is associated with another important stage in the development of pupils’ personality - entering adolescence. Other critical factors emerge during this period: relations with teachers become more formal and distanced, and therefore weaker and less active pupils receive less support and attention from the teacher, etc. It should be stressed that if no emotional reward is offered in the family, excessive negative emotions due to constant anxiety, fear and stress at school can negatively affect children’s motivation to learn on a subconscious level. Therefore, parental involvement and active interest in their child’s progress and personal achievements may become a compensatory factor in enhancing the child’s motiva- tion to learn. The research data have revealed that a reluctance to learn is one of the main factors resulting in the weakening motivation to learn for the majority of pupils. However, it should be noted that many respondents have indicated that parental help, attention and support has a positive effect on their academic performance. It has been established that pupils want to get the support of their parents in the learn- ing process. More than half of the respondents have stated that they want their par- ents to trust them and do not want to disappoint their parents; they expect parental encouragement and support.
