The aim of the research was to study and compare the motives of sports activities of high and low mastership basketball players and athletes (women). The research using the method of questionnaires was carried out in 2004-2005. The subjects consisted of high and low mastership basketball players and athletes (women) in Lithuania. The subjects included 166 sportsmen. Their age - 19,7 ± 1,1 years. The subjects were to fill in the standardized F. Herzberg's questionnaire consisting of 56 questions aimed establishing the following eight motives of activities. In the case of high mastership sportsmen, the motive of nature of activities is the most important motives of cooperation, responsibility and of achievements are rather important. Among low mastership sportsmen the most important motives of sports activities are cooperation and nature of activities motives. The comparison of research results obtained from all groups of the sportsmen studied, has shown the motive of career being the least important one.
