Abstract

In this article we would like to discuss the valid order of social integration of aliens, existing practices and problems. Lithuania has become on asylum country in 1997 and in 1998 social integration of the first aliens, which were granted asylum has started. Up to now asylum has been granted to 160 asylum seekers from Afghanistan, Lean, Iraq, Somalia, Russia (Chechenia) and some other countries. In this article essential conditions of the participation of the aliens, which are granted asylum, in the social integration programme supported by the state are presented as well as the main directions of this programme. They are: housing in the territories of municipalities, providing temporary or permanent accommodation; education of adults and minors (Lithuanian language, history, culture, religion, traditions of Lithuania etc.); employment in order to support them to earn their living legally and thus to integrate themselves to Lithuanian society; social protection and health care; awareness raising on asylum matters in order to prevent xenophobia and intolerance and social exclusion of aliens, granted asylum. Social integration of aliens is treated as a process during which they are provided with equal opportunities with the other members of the society to live on their own and to be drawn into the Lithuanian society.
