The article skims through the historical sources of direct democracy, positive features and scortcomings of its institutions and spreading in the modern fates. It is reasoned in the article why institutions of direct democracy are not efered to in the provisional constitutional acts of 1918-1920 and the Constitution of 1938 on the whole. It is stated that utilization of the direct democracy institutions provided in the rest interwar Constitutions (1922 and 1928) had a casual character only. And the constitutional documents of 1990 and 1992 in the revived Lithuania attached considerable importance to this matter, setting for themselves a principle resolution concerning possibility for the nation to exercise its sovereign power directly. Such standards of the mentioned Constitutions dealing with regulation of the direct democracy institutions as public initiative, referendum and public sanctions are being analysed.
