Summary The issue of this work is to analyse the essence of management competence in public service, emphasise its main features, purposes with the case study on Fire prevention and rescue department. The theme of this work was selected for it's growing importance and urgency in nowadays Lithuanian public administration, for the rising of modern public service demands, also taking into account that the conception of management competence is rather new term in Lithuania. The main subjects analysed in this work are as follows: the conception of management competence, it's value and interpretation in various models of public administration, it's regulation in Lithuanian legal acts; the practical part of this work provides a description of the social research, analysis of collected data and presentation of conclusions. The target of the mentioned research is to analyse the management competence of the servants of the Fire prevention and rescue department and their abilities to fulfil their tasks. Lately society becomes more educated and developed, every citizen seeks to get skilled service and that's why officers, compelled by these circumstances, should be competent specialists and managers. This makes to appear new management skills in public administration.
