Lithuania doesnt have a strong Family Medicine tradition. The social science discipline started its development in 1993 when family medicine clinics were established in the Medical Academy of Kaunas and Vilniaus University. Following the General Practitioners institutions
development therapists and paediatricians were changing their qualification. Good conditions for private physicians offices were also provided by the Health Board. Has to be noticed that there are such problems arising as lack of properly equipped general practitioners
offices, long working hours, unadequate patients education in health and illnesses prevention. All these issues are causing family practitioners difficulties in performing their functions. Therefore the research in general practitioners
work nature would allow to solve some of the problems. The aim of the research: Research deals with all the vital issues estimating general practitioners duties and functions at the family medical centre “Linkime Sveikatos”. The following issues have been examined: survey of the general practitioners institution role; analysis of legal aspects; survey of the sources of difficulties in general practitioners
work; examination of patients point of view about general practitioners in accordance with the method of quantity survey at the family medical centre “Linkime Sveikatos”. Methods and results of the research: The research took place from September till November of 2006. Patients over age of 18 were taking part in the survey. In accordance with the research such issues as: overtimes, complicated legal forms completing procedures, insufficient salary are the main factors interrupting in performance of their work and duties. It has been identified that the majority of patients of the family centre “Linkime Sveikatos” rate the medical care as “satisfactorily”. The research also shows that general practitioners give an adequate information about an illness and its early diagnose but less information about a preventive medicine and a healthy lifestyle.
