Police fight against prostitution and human trade SUMMARY Keywords: human trade, prostitution, forms of prostitution, struggle against prostutition. At the moment trafficking in women is considered to be one of the basic sources of revenue of the criminal world. This problem becomes more and more critical for the Eastern and Central Europe, including Lithuania. While discussing the problems of trafficking in women multidimensionality of this phenomenon is unfolded. Trafficking in women is both part of business of illegal migration, and outcome of economic problems, and a variety of other social problems. But the most painful thing is the broken fates, humiliation, often unheard calls for help. According to experts' estimation, the scale of trafficking in women in Lithuania is the biggest in the Baltic States. Even if the real figure of trafficked women as prostitutes is unknown, experts agree that since 1990 the number of trafficked girls to foreign brothels is increasing, the geography is expanding as well. Trafficking in women across borders, “export” of women from Lithuania is quite a new thing both for the society and for the legal and social institutions. No official statistics is available on how many women are sold to work as prostitutes to foreign countries. Different sources suggest that women from different social-demographical levels are involved in sex-industry, although main part is formed by young girls and women from so called risk groups. The consequences of illegal migration, trafficking in women and prostitution are especially negative. Illegal migrants are socially unsecured and do not have any social guarantees. The situation of the victims of trafficking in people is even worse - trafficking in women often means destroyed women's lives. It is extremely difficult for these women to return to a normal life without assistance from outside. It would be possible to avoid trafficking in women if the ways for it to appear had been blocked, if broad and purposeful preventive works had been performed. Very broad spectrum of measures might be used in prevention of trafficking in people - different ways of informing, consulting, trainings, and educations of risk groups, their social-economic situation improvement and empowerment, prevention of sexual violence and other activities. Assistance to the victims of trafficking in women is one of the essential components of fights against trafficking in people and it should be the main object for the Lithuania police that still do not have effective and clear strategy against trafficking in people.
