Abstract

The HEIsCITI project will equip students from different disciplines with the skills to revitalise the interaction between citizens and local government based on inclusive civic engagement, with a focus on sustainable development based on environmentally friendly solutions. Through this course, students will become more aware of the need for civic engagement and become responsible citizens, as well as acquire the knowledge and skills to foster the relationship between citizens and local authorities in sustainable urban development. Universities can act as a link between the needs of citizens and the goals of local government, stimulating innovation to bring together the expectations of citizens and government in the search for shared values.

The participatory approach is well known throughout Europe, but the HEIsCITI project wants to go one step further and develop a versatile, interdisciplinary training suitable for all types of students - from pedagogy to medicine, from technical sciences to art and design, from biotechnology to social sciences. Students from all types of specialisations will learn how to understand the needs of citizens and how to meet local government objectives through sustainable and inclusive urban development solutions. This is an approach that is really needed now, in the post-COVID era, when people have started to take more interest in the world around them, in Planet Earth, in well-being and in other people.
