The school leader (principal) is in much of the literature considered to be a key figure to strengthen school autonomy and to stimulate the further development of the school organization. In this paper we answer the question whether school leaders in Lithuania are able and willing to take the lead. The presented findings of our qualitative study provide a deeper understanding of current leadership problems in Lithuania. Moreover, comparing the presented findings with school leadership literature and the assumptions underlying the recently changed school leader appointment procedure reveal in particular that a clear vision about school leadership lacks and that some general management competences such as directing people, making decisions and strategic thinking are underdeveloped.
