Background The Catechol-o-methyl transferase (COMT) enzyme encoded by the COMT gene is involved in dopamine degradation. Lower enzyme activity results higher level of catecholamine, that can impact psychological functions, including addiction. So the aim of our study was to investigation of the frequency of COMT gene polymorphisms in psychotropic drug users. This will assist for more personalised and ethical medicine approach. Methods The study involved 73 patients aged 18 to 75 years.from InMedica Santariškės clinics who were tested for A/A, A/G and G/G COMT genes. Results The study analyzed the frequency of comt gene polymorphisms in 73 psychotropic drug users. It was identified A/A genotypes in 17, A/G in 37, G/G in 19 participants. People with reduced enzyme activity (A/A genotype) are more sensitive to pain and axiety, so need sparing and ethical care. Conclusion In studied cohort we detected high rates of more rare A/A genotype, which is related to lower amount of COMT enzyme impacting higer level of catecholamine in the organism. Testing for COMT gene needs proper informed consent for the patient and appropriate bioethical consideration.
