The authors of the article present a systematic approach to people’s motives for travelling. For this reason with the view of the change in the travel motives in the historical context and nowadays perspective the authors present a survey of the motives for travelling as discussed by different tourism specialists and survey the models publicized in scientific literature. The authors agree that the change in travel motives influences the supply of a tourist product and can be formulated as a transition from nowadays ”hard” to the future “soft” tourism. The relationship between the people’s travel motives and tourism types is analyzed in the article and the authors submit their view on the matter. While presenting the statistics and their own results, authors analyze the drawbacks in organizing tourism in Lithuania as well as opportunities for tourism development. At the end of the article the authors draw appropriate conclusions.
