The paper presents the problem of the teacher's role where a student is an active participant. The authors compare teacher-directed' learning with student-directed learning and indicate a number of dimensions in which learners move away from dependence on the teacher. It is emphasized that a modern self-directed teacher should develop his/her professional competence and ability to self-reflect throughout their career. Some reasons for promoting independent language learning are given. The research took place in a form of questionnaire and was designed for the teachers of English. The aim of it was to comprehend what were the "'know-hows" that teachers; used to enrich their students' acquisition of new words. The results of a short-term pedagogical experiment as a part of the longitudinal study are presented.
