This article overviews the notion of crime characteristics, that is used to define only certain elements in crime investigation in western countries. Crime characteristics provides all important data of a detailed crime event, type of violence and trends. The structure of crime characteristics is the following: type of offence, offender, crime object/victim and crime situation. The type of offence reports details about criminal activity and both objective and subjective circumstances of an incident. This is a whole pattern of criminal activity to achieve a criminal goal. Every crime event is related to a certain type of personality, and the offender's personality is suggested to be analysed by prediction, retrospective analysis and prevention. Crime object or victim analysis assess objectively the crime event, defines crime motives and the suspects, Crime situation is a specific element of crime characteristics as it describes the circumstances under which the crime has been committed. Crime circumstances suggest a type of offence and define a criminal personality. The notion of criminal characteristics refers not only to a scientific theory, out it is used in empirical crime investigation, too. Criminal characteristics is meaningful in case of coorelation between all its elements.
