The aim of the article is to evaluate the Common Assessment Framework as a tool for total quality management as well as the peculiarities of its application and the benefit provided for public sector institutions. The object of the article is the Common Assessment Framework. The research subject is the application of the Common Assessment Framework (CAF) in public sectoT institutions of Lithuania. The article deals with the importance of total quality management, its origin and the particularity of its implementation in the public sector. The models and methods for total quality management mat are frequently used are discussed as well. In addition to ihis, the origin of the CAF and its principles arc briefly indicated and the main stages for the application of the CAF are described and analyzed while presenting observations that allow employing the CAF more fluently. After the analysis of the particularity foi the application of the framework, the investigation into the experience of European countries applying the CAF is presented. Having carried out the research, it was indicated that the implementation CAF in Lithuanian public sector institutions was started only one year and a half ago. All the institutions that applied the framework, prepared improvement and suggestion implementation plans and the results of the CAF were included into the process of strategic planning. All the institutions are planning to implement the CAF in the future.
