The article approaches the students teaching and learning aspect in Lithuanian gymnasiums. In the last twelve years this aspect has been especially actualised by various social sciences. It analyses the formal gymnasium documents, where the importance of strengthening the teaching (learning) process is emphasized, as well as the trends of new school style creation and the problems occurring in implementation of ideas. Peculiarities of readiness and activity of gymnasia are investigated in this article as an exceptional phenomenon of the educational reform, active and constructive force having big impact on the course of the reform raising interest of the society, reflecting values of the society and stimulating to reflect them. From all the aims of the gymnasium, due to the impact of the centralised policy, only one aim has remained for gymnasia at the time of the research: to try to meet needs of various children as much as possible maximum results, become a school of high cooperation culture good microclimate, and qualified teachers, i.e. be simply a good, universal school n secondary education to all. Several more distinct differences of gymnasia in districts and cities have been established. Students in districts are more focused on knowledge, likewise indirectly on studies in higher schools. They take an active part in competitions, contests. In districts usually containing less students the problem of unacceptable timetable is more urgent.
