As an independent concept, self-expression is the subject of intense attention from legal scholars around the world. Depending on certain legal traditions, views on the definition of self-expression, its limits, the limits of possible regulation, etc., differ. This article primarily examines the European legal tradition and the place of self-expression in it through an analysis of the historical roots of the concept of self-expression, the predecessors of this concept, and the current state of affairs. First, the main emphasis is placed on the analysis of trends in the concept of self-expression, taking into account modern European Union legislation, ideas for its development, the existing legal provisions of the European countries, and the current political situation. The analysis of historical tendencies, the works of other scholars, the law of the European Union, and judicial precedents form a basis of this work, and the results of their analysis form the conclusions of this article.
