The article presents computer algebra system (CAS) Maxima and its use in the teaching process. Maxima is an open source cross-platform computer algebra system. It is a system for the manipulation of symbolic and numerical expressions, including differentiation, integration, Taylor series, Laplace transforms, ordinary differential equations, systems of linear equations, polynomials, and sets, lists, vectors, matrices, and tensors. The article discusses the possibilities of the CAS and its history. The CAS Maxima is compared to other CAS, such as Maple, Mathematica, Euler Math Toolbox and SAGE, analysing its advantages and differences. We use CAS Maxima for teaching linear algebra, caIculus, ordinary differential equations and numerical computations in Mykolas Romeris University and Vilnius University. The article is reIevant and valuabIe for teachers and students as weil as for other persons who are interested in the open source computer algebra systems.
