Reading Korean women writers in translation

When comparing literary women stories by Korean writers recently translated into English: Please Look After Mom by Kyung-sook Shin translated by Chi-young Kim in 2011, The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly by Sun Mi Hwang translated by Chi-young Kim in 2013, the novel of Han Kang The vegetarian translated by Deborah Smith and published in 2016, and The Impossible Fairy Tale by Han Yujoo recently translated into English by Janet Hong in 2017 and the critical perception of the English texts in Western literary criticism as well as the voices of Korean critics who bring the world readership the message of a chasm between the values of the texts that are known to Korean and English readers, there emerge numerous questions as to what extent world literatures communicate national or global messages and what literary values make fictional narratives stand out when they are exposed to quote Rebecca Walkowitz to "close reading at a distance". The paper overviews the tendencies of critical reading of the above listed translated Korean narratives representing a generational spread of Korean women writers.
