Abstract

The usage of verbs in Lithuanian and Latvian scientific and journalistic texts is discussed on the basis of frequency dictionaries of corresponding styles in both languages compiled by the same methods. The most frequent 20 verbs in catch style are analyzed. It has been found that there are many concurrences and similarities among them. The main verb forms, moods, tenses and the usage of persons, as well as the usage of participle tenses and cases, are given and compared. The following conclusions have been drawn: conjugative forms, forms of the third person, passive participles and the nominative case of participles predominate in the texts of both languages in both styles under comparison; the usage of verb tenses differs, depending on the style and on the language; and the usage of participle tenses in the Lithuanian scientific and journalistic texts differs as well.
