The master’s thesis analyzes the problem of violence in the family. Domestic violence (within a family) is not defined in any law act of the country. Violent assaults at home or outside is a crime. Crimes (offences) that are attributed to domestic violence are characterized by special latency, because the persons who suffered from it usually are ashamed to talk about that, are afraid to be denounced and experience even more serious violence. Violence in a family is a very serious and widespread problem in Lithuania and, unfortunately, currently solving it is mostly interesting to non-governmental organizations, social services and representatives of the law enforcement. The efforts of these institutions will not produce necessary result, as long as the position of the Government is not clear and there is no support from it. Due to the lack of information society does not adequately realize the scale and reasons of violence against parents. Certain ways to protect oneself from the emerging threat to experience violence of one or another kind are given in literature and the preventive posters. Most frequently the posters are aimed at women and children who experience domestic violence, but parents, who more and more often become victims of violent children, are forgotten. What makes domestic violence special is that it is widespread; its roots are stricken deep into social relations, but the society insistently avoids recognizing it and giving proper evaluation. If we want to ease the lot of the victims of domestic violence at least a bit, we must first learn to name violence as such, help victims to understand their rights and teach them how to use those rights. We must learn from such developed countries as countries of Western Europe and the USA that are dealing with these problems for 25-30 years already. To sum up, the conclusion can be drawn that domestic violence against parents is as acute and more and more evidently noticed problem as violence against women or children, its decision does not depend solely on the police efforts, it might also be possible to adopt experience of the establishments of foreign countries, paying attention to social and economical situation of our country, its traditions and customs.
