The absence of a proper and united concept of beginning of life has a critical impact on the legalization of abortion. Presently there are three main theories on legal protection of beginning of human life: right to life from the conception, right to life from a particular moment of development, and right to life from the moment of birth. An infant’s right to life in Lithuania is only guaranteed from the moment of birth. In Lithuania abortions are legalized by the order of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Lithuania On the Order of Performance of Operation of Termination of Pregnancy No 51, 24 01 1994. The existing order on legal abortion and other related legal acts conflict with the European Convention on Human Rights, article 1 and the Constitution of the Republic of Lithuania, article 19. The legalization of abortion violates the doctrine of free and informed consent. A legalized abortion violates a parent’s right to his/her child. With regard to the protection of the rights of the child, abortion is a violation of a natural right to life of a child. A legalized abortion undermines health of many women, damages emotional state of men, children and medical personnel, impairs their interrelationships. Allowing the society to kill children legal abortion stimulates disrespect to life and reproduces violence.
