Lithuania lags behind EU countries in the level of economic expansion 30-40 years. The aim of the economic development of Lithuania is to decrease the backwardness from the most economically developed countries. In order to achieve this, a more rapid economic groth than in those countries is necessary. The average rate of the economy extension in Lithuania should be 6% a year. There is no doubt that the policy of external economic relations will play the major role in achieving this aim. However, in Lithuania, there is a lack of a clear position, i.e. which way our economy is going. Now we are attempting to go in two different directions simultaneously. In the strategic documents it is declared that we are trying to achieve the model of European well-being. Nevertheless, we are implementing the American monetary model which, on the contrary, ramoves Lithuania from the common aims of the European Union. The economic policy of Lithuania is not oriented towards the finding of solutions to the social problems. In fact, during the whole period of the market reform, there was too little attention paid to the social problems. In the present paper there was the development of the main macro-economic indicators during the years 1994-2006 analysed, the main tendencies as well as levers of this development were disclosed, the main directions of macro-economic policy in Lithuania were presented, the main problems in the domain were indicated as well as possible ways of their solution.
