SUMMARY The World Bank and its activities in Lithuania KEY WORDS: The World Bank, the project of the World Bank, the loan of the World bank, knowledge economics. The World Bank is an international financial organization which combines knowledge and financial resources, helps countries to fight poverty, provides financial support for the sectors which are essential for mankind. The World Bank was established during the Bretton Woods conference in 1944. Since then 184 countries have become members of it. During the transition from the planned economy to the market economy financial institutions (such as the World Bank, the Bank of European reconstruction and extension, the European investment bank and others) played an important role in the economy of Lithuania. These institutions have a great influence on the reforms being carried out in the field of economics, social security, health care, education, environment protection, agriculture as well as in other spheres of economy of Lithuania and other countries. Furthermore, it is reflected in people’s daily life. During the period of Lithuania’s integration into the European Union the character of the activities performed by financial institutions has been changing, though they still make a significant influence on the economy of the country. This thesis consists of two major parts. The first part deals with the history of the World Bank. It features its mission, aims and tasks. The members of the World Bank are also discussed here. Significant attention is paid to the most important activity of the World Bank loan granting to the member – countries. The second part presents a study of the activities of the Word Bank in Lithuania. It analyses the reports estimating knowledge economics and investments made by the World Bank in Lithuania. Major World bank projects carried out in Lithuania are described there too. The conclusions are presented in the closing part of the thesis. The thesis consists of the 54 pages. It includes 4 tables, 8 pictures, 1 diagram and 4 appendixes.
