Abstract

Conscientious objection to military service is defined as the refusal by an individual to participate in war or the preparation for war because to do so would violate that individual’s moral, ethical, religious or other beliefs. The purpose of this study is to review the origin, historical development and the content of the aforementioned right; determine whether the provisions of the main human rights documents grant the right for the conscientious objectors to refuse to perform military service. The recognition and protection of the aforementioned right and the related deriving problems are tackled at universal, regional and national levels.
