Abstract

The main concepts: a refugee, refugee status, an asylum seeker, integration of refugees, social adaptation. The master’s paper by applying theoretical and empiric data aims to reveal the peculiarities of the refugee institute, the adaptation within the society problems as well as to envisage the spheres that should improved. The master’s paper sets the following tasks: - collect and analyze the data that governs the refugee status; - collect and analyze the data on the current programs and projects of refugees’ social integration; - specify the problems for refugee social adaptation and propose possible solutions. The object of the work is the investigation of the refugees’ social adaptation problems in the asylum country and ways how to cope with these problems. The subject of the master’s paper is the Laws of the Republic of Lithuania and posterior legal acts that regulate the refugee status, the legal documents issued by the Refugee Center, the current programs referred to the social integration of refugees. The methods applied in the master’s paper are as follows: analysis of scientific literature, comparative historical approach, systemic analysis, summing-up, as well as the empiric analysis of the instruments. The work consists of introduction, three main parts and conclusions together with the suggestions. The introductions reveals the aim of the paper, sets the problems and tasks, defines the object and essence of the work as well as the methods applied. The first part of the master’s paper deals with general provisions of refugee status, the tendencies of the asylum institute development, the concept of a refugee, the legal status of an asylum seeker and a refugee, the rights and obligations of refugees. The second part of the paper concentrates its attention on the refugees’ integration within the society. It is the core of the paper. It reveals the possibilities for refugee’s social integration, the applied methods in the integration process, the problems faced by the refugees in the process of social adaptation as well as the possible solutions of how to tackle these problems. The third part deals with the specific cases of refugees’ social adaptation. The conclusions and suggestions foresee the prospects for elaboration of the legal basis that regulates the refugee status and their social integration.
