Occupational stress is a fact of life today. The Health and Safety Commission of Great Britain established that nursing is second by occupational stress, but there are no researches on stress management in nursing in Lithuania. The aim of the work: to research reasons that cause stress and management of stress in nursing, present recommendations to managers of health care organizations how to decrease the stress level and improve the health of nurses and efficiency of organization. Object of study: occupational stress in nursing and management of it. Subject of research: job stress in nursing. Hypotheses: 1. The nurses often feel stress at work. 2. Managers of health care organizations don’t pay much attention to stress management in nursing. Methods: analysis of scientific literature; questionnaire; interview; qualitative and quantitative data analysis. The method of the survey: in 2 outpatient clinics incidentally were questioned 130 nurses (44 in “Lazdynu” outpatient clinic, 86 in “Seskines”) and 2 managers of nurses. Results of the research: nurses are often under a stress at work (68,4% of nurses marked that feel stress at work very often or often). Reasons that cause stress at work: physically and emotionally hard (stressful) work; the lack of precautions; insufficient participation in making decisions related to their work; insufficient (inadequate) backup about nurses’ work from managers. Managers pay insufficient attention to stress management in nursing: managers don’t organize any training for nurses about stress at work; in nurses opinion they don’t have any places for rest during the break; managers don’t organize yearly evaluation meetings. Suggestions: to create with psychologist program of stress management taking into account results of this research; partly change organizational culture and style of management (involve nurses in decision making; organize yearly evaluation meetings); decrease work load (decrease number of patients; improve knowledge); create comfortable and safe work environment.
