    Scope 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and cyber-physical resilience are typically governed through separate institutional and operational frameworks, despite their growing interdependence in digitally mediated supply chains. This separation creates an execution gap that fragments decarbonization, resilience, and investment decisions across data architectures and organizational functions. Grounded in resilience theory and a transdisciplinary systems perspective, this study advances the testable hypothesis that institutional separation of Scope 3 emissions management and cyber-physical resilience is associated with lower system performance, whereas integration through digital governance mechanisms improves operational resilience, emissions measurement accuracy, and financial decision coherence. System performance is operationalized through three dimensions: (1) supply-chain observability and data integration; (2) resilience capacity across the prepare–absorb–recover–adapt cycle; and (3) coherence of investment decision-making under dual materiality. The study applies a structured integrative review with analytical triangulation across sectoral datasets, cyber-risk distributions, and governance frameworks, complemented by an illustrative application in emergency medical services (EMS) in Lithuania. Findings indicate that Scope 3 burdens and cyber-physical risks co-locate in supplier-intensive and digitally dependent sectors, revealing systemic vulnerability; and that effective integration requires a joint governance architecture linking digital observability, standards, financial evaluation, and human-centered decision-making. The article contributes an integrative framework that reframes decarbonization and cyber-physical resilience as a unified systems problem and provides an operational basis for coordinated governance across sustainable supply chains.

    This paper reports on using low-cost, energy-efficient magnetic measurements to study pollution in the Lviv agglomeration, a major industrial and cultural centre of Western Ukraine. Soil magnetic properties were measured in two areas and along one transect. 66 surface topsoil samples were collected in the grid surveyed (a depth of 0–5 cm) at Jewish Park, 33 samples—along the transect. 15 soil samples were taken randomly from an area of Lychakiv Park to identify the magnetic properties of natural soil in the study area. The highest values of magnetic susceptibility (χ) were recorded in soil samples collected near roads with heavy traffic and the railway embankment area (150–237 × 10–8 m3/kg); At a distance of about 20–25 m from the road the χ values were 45–80 × 10–8 m3/kg. In the green space zones of Jewish Park, the Vysokyi Zamok castle, and the Lychakiv Cemetery, χ values displayed a significant decrease (12–24 × 10–8 m3/kg). The thermomagnetic analyses demonstrated a global maximum at 128 K, close to the Verwey transition and the isotropic point of magnetite. The hysteresis parameters suggest the presence of coarse-grained pseudo-single domain (PSD) and multidomain grains (MD) in the samples. The obtained results could be valuable in determining hotspots and pollution levels in the Lviv area using magnetic measurements of soil, as well as further precision geochemical studies.

    Slash-pile burning is a frequent land management practice implemented across the Mediterranean. However, the impact of this practice on runoff waters has often been neglected. To address this issue, two experimental burns were conducted: one with moderate (MS) severity, and another with high (HS) severity, to evaluate the impact of different types of slash–pile on the quality of runoff waters. An unburned (UB) treatment was also considered in this study, to evaluate the impacts of slash–pile burning per se. Treatments were established on a slope terrain (∼18°) characteristic of the Adriatic coast. During the two-year study, runoff and erosion samples were collected 22 times after major rainfall events. Aside from runoff, erosion, and total carbon in sediments (TC) were determined, as well as various water quality parameters, including, pH, electrical conductivity (EC), and Br¯, Cl¯, SO4 2¯, PO4 3¯, F¯, K+, Na+, Ca2+, and Mg2+. Overall, water quality parameters were more affected shortly after burning, while runoff and erosion were more dependent on precipitation patterns. TC in sediments was higher in HS than in MS, the highest values being observed in the last sampling events for both burned treatments. Regarding runoff water quality, the effects were more pronounced at HS, even if the hydrological response was stronger at the MS. The UB treatment showed significant changes in runoff water quality following major rain events, which was attributed to soil saturation. Our results suggest that slash pile burning has adverse effects on runoff waters, so it is recommended for biomass to be used in other ways, especially in the context of soil and water conservation.

    Evidence suggests an impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health, particularly among emerging adults. However, theories on altruism born of suffering or adversarial growth suggest that we might also see prosocial behavior as a function of the pandemic, which may protect against mental health challenges. Because cultural values are central in determining prosocial behavior, the current study explored how cultural values were differentially associated with adaptive prosocial behaviors that might protect against mental health challenges. Participants for the current study included 5,682 young people aged 18–25 years from 14 different countries around the world (68% female, 62% college students). Path analyses suggested that there were few differences in patterns as a function of culture, but revealed that horizontal individualism and horizontal and vertical collectivism were indirectly associated with lower levels of depression via prosocial behavior toward family members. Discussion focuses on the importance of coping by strengthening family relationships via prosocial behavior during the pandemic.

    The arid and semiarid grassland ecosystems are characterized by limited water resources and are generally vulnerable to climate change. Understanding how plants in arid and semiarid ecosystems respond to global climatic variation is crucial for ecological restoration under a changing climate. Although the effects of climate on aboveground biomass (AGB) and belowground biomass (BGB) have been widely explored, how AGB and BGB respond to climatic variation is seldom disentangled. There is still a need to understand how plant communities respond to global climate change. In this study, we conducted a transect survey across grasslands in Inner Mongolia to capture changes in AGB and BGB in plant communities. Then, we used structural equation modelling (SEM) to explore the relationship between environmental factors and the root:shoot ratio to understand how plant communities respond to ecological drought under global climate change. Our results showed that low precipitation use efficiency (LPUE) results in a high root:shoot (HRS) ratio, and BGB was more sensitive to environmental changes. By contrast, high precipitation use efficiency (HPUE) led to a low root:shoot (LRS) ratio, and environmental factors had a greater impact on AGB. For the LPUE pattern, soil water content (SWC), pH, and soil total nitrogen (STN) mainly affected the HRS ratio. Soil water content and STN influenced the HRS ratio through a positive effect on BGB. For the HPUE pattern, SWC, STN, and plant abundance (PA) predominantly regulate the LRS ratio, while biodiversity (plant abundance) affects the LRS ratio by positively affecting AGB. Our results highlight the differential impact of precipitation use efficiency on aboveground and belowground biomass allocation. This is important for monitoring the impact of drought events on plant biomass, improving productivity assessment models in arid and semi-arid regions, and assessing local carbon storage accurately.

    (1) Background: Current scientific evidence suggests that most cancers, including breast cancer, can be treated during pregnancy without compromising maternal and fetal outcomes. This, however, raises questions regarding the ethical implications of clinical care. (2) Methods: Using a systematic literature search, 32 clinical practice guidelines for cancer treatment during pregnancy published between 2002 and 2021 were selected for analysis and 25 of them mentioned or made references to medical ethics when offering clinical management guidance for clinicians. (3) Results: Four bioethical themes were identified: respect for patient’s autonomy, balanced approach to maternal and fetal beneficence, protection of the vulnerable and justice in resource allocation. Most guidelines recommended informing the pregnant patient about available evidence-based treatment options, offering counselling and support in the process of decision making. The relational aspect of a pregnant patient’s autonomy was also recognized and endorsed in a significant number of available guidelines. (4) Conclusions: Recognition and support of a patient’s autonomy and its relational aspects should remain an integral part of future clinical practice guidelines. Nevertheless, a more structured approach is needed when addressing existing and potential ethical issues in clinical practice guidelines for cancer treatment during pregnancy.

    The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between psychological hardiness, basic psychological need (BPN) satisfaction (Self-Determination theory, Deci & Ryan, 2000), soldiers’ engagement, and general self-reported health. We hypothesized that the effect of psychological hardiness on soldiers’ engagement and general health is mediated by the satisfaction of basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence, and relatedness). Data from a questionnaire survey was collected among soldiers of the Lithuanian Armed forces (N = 506) using The Hardiness – Resilience Gauge (HRG), Basic Need Satisfaction at Work Scale, Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES – 9) and General Health Questionnaire (GHQ – 12). Structural equation modelling was used to evaluate the hypothesis of a mediating role of BPN satisfaction within the relationship between hardiness and soldier’s engagement and general health. The results showed mediating effects of satisfaction of BPN on psychological hardiness and health, and engagement relationship, thus providing support for our hypothesis. Implications of the results are discussed.

    This study investigated BCG masking dependency on the species of Mycobacterium through the immune response to the mycobacterial region of deletion 1 (RD-1) associated growth affecting proteins (GEP).To evaluate the effects of GEP, 8-week old female BALB/c mice were immunized with either the wild type Mycobacterium bovis (MBGEP) or the ATCC Mycobacterium avium subsp. avium (MAGEP) strain and then subjected to further exposure with Mycobacterium terrae or M. avium sub. avium. Mice immunized with MAGEP and those mice further exposed to M. avium subsp. avium had increased granulocytes (GRA) and monocytes to lymphocytes rate (MLR) compared to control mice. Immunization of mice with GEP induced an antibody response one month after primary immunization, as observed by cross-reactivity. Our findings suggest that MAGEP is related to a latent hypersensitivity reaction and an increased risk of mycobacterial infection susceptibility. According to the results of the present study, previous sensitization with NTM antigens results in varying immune reactions after contact with different NTM argued that masking phenomena may be dependent on the species of Mycobacterium.

    Conscription is an exceptionally stressful life event for young adults. During service, some conscripts manage to cope with service challenges and demands, stay engaged and motivated. Others develop serious adjustment problems, which prevents them from continuing the service. The personality characteristic of psychological hardiness has been recognized as a protective factor against adversity and stressful events. The aim of this study is (1) compare levels of psychological hardiness between mandatory service volunteers and draftees (personal choice); (2) examine the direct and indirect effects of the relationship between psychological hardiness, basic psychological need satisfaction (Self-determination theory; Deci & Ryan, 2000) and engagement; (3) explore the potential moderating role of personal choice (i.e. volunteer service status) in the direct and indirect links between hardiness, need fulfilment, and engagement. The results among a sample of Lithuanian Armed Forces conscripts (N = 601) showed that conscripts who joined military service voluntarily scored significantly higher on hardiness compared to draftees. In addition, results of the structural equation analyses showed that the effect of psychological hardiness on conscripts’ engagement is at least partially mediated by psychological need satisfaction; this relationship is moderated by volunteer service status. This study is among the first to explore the role of personal choice (i.e. volunteer service status) for predicting conscripts’ engagement.
