The title of the Master’s thesis is- Assessment of Family Support in Addressing the Development of Parenting Skills. The object of the research- is the assessment of family support in addressing the development of parenting skills. The aim of the thesis is to reveal how family support is assessed in the context of developing parenting skills. The objectives of the thesis are: 1. To analyse the characteristics of the family as a system and the main difficulties parents face in raising children; 2. To discuss the organisation of family support through the application of case management principles and the implementation of family support plans; 3. To describe the concept of parenting skills and their importance for child development; 4. To analyse how family support aimed at developing parenting skills is assessed in social work practice. The participants of the study- were case managers working in Social Service Centres with families receiving case management services and having at least one year of professional experience. Methods of data analysis used in the thesis: 1. Analysis of scientific literature and legal documents. This method was applied to examine the characteristics of the family as a system, the concept and process of parenting skills development, the application of the case management model, and the assessment of parenting skills in Lithuania. 2. Qualitative data collection method – semi-structured interviews conducted according to a pre-prepared questionnaire. The interview method was used to explore the experiences of case managers in providing support to families and assessing the development of parenting skills. A purposive sample of 10 case managers providing services to families involved in the case management process and experiencing various difficulties was selected for the qualitative study. 3. Data analysis method – qualitative content analysis. The results of the empirical study revealed- that the assessment of family support in the development of parenting skills is carried out comprehensively, relying not only on the structured criteria established in the child and/or family assessment forms, but also on the professional experience of specialists, observation of the family, and information received from other institutions. The findings showed that family support is individualised and adapted to each family’s specific situation, prevailing problems, and risk factors, while avoiding standardised support plans that do not meet the actual needs of the family. The study also found that the assessment of parenting skills is complicated by insufficiently clear evaluation criteria and by situations in which the child does not live with the family, making it difficult to assess parenting skills in practice due to limited opportunities to observe whether parents’ behaviour towards the child is changing.
