Magistro darbo tema - „Vaikų gyvenimo įgūdžių ugdymas dienos centruose“. Nors Lietuvoje vaikų dienos centrai veikia nuo 1996 m., tačiau tyrimų analizuojančių vaikų gyvenimo įgūdžių ugdymo realijas vaikų dienos centruose vis dar stokojama. Mokslinė problema siejama su siekiu atskleisti vaikų gyvenimo įgūdžių ugdymo praktines patirtis dienos centruose. Keliami šie probleminiai klausimai: 1. Kaip dienos centruose ugdomi vaikų gyvenimo įgūdžiai? 2. Kokie veiksniai įgalina veiksmingai ugdyti vaikų gyvenimo įgūdžius dienos centruose? 3.
The topic of the Final Master Thesis is “Development of life skills of children in day care centres”. Although children's day care centres are operating in Lithuania since 1996, there is still a lack of studies conducted regarding the realities of the development of life skills of children in children's day care centres. The scientific issue has been related to the intention to reveal the practical experience of developing life skills of children in day care centres. There have been the following problems raised: 1. How are life skills of children being developed in day care centres? 2. What factors contribute to the efficient development of life skills of children in day care centres? 3. What difficulties do social workers face in developing life skills of children in day care centres and how do they deal with them? 4. What competences of social workers are important in developing life skills of children? The subject of the study is “Development of life skills of children in day care centres”. The objective of the Final Master Thesis is to reveal theoretical and practical opportunities for development of life skills of children in children's day care centres. Tasks: 1. To discuss the theoretical aspects of development of life skills of children. 2. To reveal the role of day care centres in developing life skills of children 3. To reveal experience of social workers in developing life skills of children in day care centres. Methods of work: Theoretical: analysis of scientific literature and legislation related to the topic in order to reveal the theoretical aspects of development of life skills of children in day care centres. There has been the empirical qualitative study using a semi-structured interview method to identify practical experiences in development of life skills of children in day care centres, based on the experience of social workers, used. There has been qualitative content analysis applied to the analysis of results obtained from the study. Scientific sources present definitions of life skills differently, however, all definitions relate to the ability of individual to live an independent life. The classification of life skills includes the following: self-knowledge, critical and creative thinking, communication and cooperation, problem solving, empathy, stress and emotion management, as well as health-friendly skills that are important for independent life of a person. The analysis of scientific sources indicates that the lack of child support in the family, the lack of parental involvement in lives of the children and the provision of a safe environment, the negative impact of peers, the lack of emotional safety of children in schools lead to social exclusion of children, as it limits opportunities of children to develop skills important for life and increases the risk of developing behavioural and emotional difficulties. For this reason, it is extremely important to reduce negative environmental factors and focus to ensuring a safe environment and promoting a positive social experience either in the child's family, school, or in the environment of peers. Children's day care centres play an important role in developing life skills of children and their purpose has been focused on providing services to children from families experiencing social difficulties. The main objective of these centres is to develop life skills of children. Social workers in day care centres aim to develop life skills of children in order to successfully integrate them into society. The study has revealed the following: lack of life skills of children and their expression, factors that affect lack of life skills of children, as well as factors that help to develop life skills of children in day care centres, and difficulties faced by social workers in developing life skills of children in day care centres and ways to solve them. The results of the study have shown the lack of life skills of children. Children lack developing contact and are unable to engage in conversation properly, as well as to ask for help properly. The lack of developing contact skills has also been highlighted in the outcomes: children use inappropriate words (swear, insulting words); they also do not listen to what other person says, and interrupt the speaker. They are unable to properly accept the opinion expressed by other child, and also to resolve issues that arise. It is quite difficult for children to name their emotions and manage them properly, as well as to calm down. A lack of skills in organising activities and collaborating in a group has been evident: there is a lack of elementary activity planning skills, there is an inability to complete activities; and when working in a group, children are unable to agree among themselves who would perform which task. Children have also been found to lack such skills as cooking, housework, as well as etiquette at the table. The results of the study have indicated that children lack healthy lifestyle skills: personal hygiene, healthy nutrition and physical activity. There have emerged factors that affect lack of life skills of children that are related to the family, school and peer environment. Lack of parental skills, lack of parental time devoted to the child and lack of responsiveness to children's needs hurt the development of the life skills of children. The lack of school support for the child and of communication between educators and children also has a negative impact on the development of life skills of children. The lack of help at school manifests itself: insufficient individual attention of teachers to the child, lack of effective assistance in cases of difficulties encountered, as well as bullying. The lack of communication between teachers and children has been manifested: lack of communication between teachers and children, in case of problematic situations there is failure to listen to children, failure to pay attention to the situation, and lack of support when faced with difficulties. It has been found that bullying, friendliness and mutual understanding among peers are also factors that affect the development of life skills of children. The results of the study have showed factors that help to develop life skills of children in day care centres. It has been found out that the assessment of the existing and lacking life skills of children, knowledge of the child's interests, inclinations and response to his individual needs are important factors in developing life skills of children. The results of the study have shown that creating the right conditions to develop life skills in the day care centre is related to creating positive relationships between the social worker and the child and positive relationships between children, practical activities, individual and group conversations, the child's incentives, team tasks, setting an appropriate example, as well as through play activities and agreements and rules. The study has revealed that cooperation between day care professionals in sharing experiences and helping each other is an important factor in developing life skills of children. Cooperation with the child's parents/guardians is also important in order to consistently develop life skills of children and ensure the continuity of their education in the close environment of the child. Cooperation with other institutions is also used to organise educational and recreational activities that contribute to the development of life skills of children. Volunteers and students also contribute to the development of life skills of children. The study has revealed that day care centres face various difficulties in developing life skills of children: lack of funding and human resources, lack of methodologies to develop life skills of children, lack of employee competencies in working with children with behavioural and emotional difficulties, disorders as well as obstacles to cooperation between employees. The outcomes of the study have also revealed difficulties at the individual level of the child: formed inappropriate habits and behaviours, lack of motivation, excessive focus on smart technologies. Difficulties in cooperation with the parents of the child have also highlighted: social workers find it difficult to establish and maintain contact with the dependent parents of the child; the home does not provide adequate conditions for developing the life skills of children. There have been the following solutions to difficulties in developing life skills of children identified: individual work with children, individual conversations with parents of the child, supervision, sharing experiences with specialists of the day centre and other institutions, as well as participation of social workers in various trainings.
