Conserving resources is a form of pro-environmental behavior that consciously aims to reduce the consumption of various resources (Steg et al., 2019). The aim of this study is to investigate how transformational leadership predicts employees’ attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control, and contributes to individuals’ intentions and behaviors regarding resource conservation in the workplace. A quantitative study was conducted involving 151 participants. In this study, data were analyzed using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The results showed that transformational leadership positively predicts private- sector employees’ attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control in the workplace. Subjective norms influence employees’ intentions to conserve resources in the workplace. Contrary to the assumptions proposed by the author of the Theory of Planned Behavior, Ajzen (1991), this study did not identify a predictive relationship between attitudes and perceived behavioral control with employees’ behavioral intentions. As expected, intentions significantly predicted past resource conservation behavior. An indirect predictive relationship between subjective norms and resource- conserving behavior via intentions was found. The findings of this study confirm that the Theory of Planned Behavior together with transformational leadership is an appropriate framework for examining resource conservation behavior. Furthermore, transformational leadership appears to be an important organizational factor with a significant influence on psychological aspects that contribute to the formation of intentions and behavior in the workplace. The relationships identified in this study provide insights for future research and for actions that organizations should take in order to change environmentally unfriendly employee behavior.
