The master’s thesis “Development of Independent Living Skills for People with Intellectual Disabilities in Day Centres” examines the development of independent living skills in day centres, analysing the theoretical foundations of this process as well as the practical experience of social workers. The relevance of this study lies in the fact that people with intellectual disabilities often lack independent living skills. The development of these skills is a key factor in increasing individuals’ independence, reducing their reliance on others, and improving their quality of life and social inclusion. Day centres constitute an important social environment in which opportunities are created to develop practical, social, and emotional skills, strengthen independence, and promote individuals’ social inclusion. The aim of this study is to examine the theoretical and practical aspects of developing independent living skills for individuals with intellectual disabilities in day centres. Research objectives: 1. To highlight the importance of developing independent living skills for people with intellectual disabilities. 2. To discuss the role of day centres in developing independent living skills for people with intellectual disabilities. 3. To explore the role of social workers in developing independent living skills for people with intellectual disabilities in day centres. 4. To identify the realities of developing independent living skills for people with intellectual disabilities in day centres, based on the experience of social workers. Methods used: Theoretical methods: Analysis of scientific literature to examine the concept of independent living skills, the importance of developing them, and the role of day centres in fostering these skills. Empirical methods: A qualitative research design was chosen for this empirical study, employing a semi-structured interview method to explore social workers’ experiences in developing independent living skills among individuals with intellectual disabilities in day centres. Qualitative content analysis was applied to analyse the research data. 1. The theoretical analysis revealed that opportunities for independence among individuals with intellectual disabilities depend on both individual and environmental factors. Individual factors include self-esteem, self-awareness, intrinsic motivation, emotional state, cognitive abilities, and existing life skills. Environmental factors operate at the micro level (family support, relatives’ attitudes towards the individual, and support from professionals), the meso level (the education and social services system, day centre activities, and community involvement), and the macro level (national social policy and public attitudes towards individuals with intellectual disabilities). The interaction of these factors determines a person’s ability to develop independence skills and participate fully in society. Independent living skills are a key factor influencing the quality of life of individuals with intellectual disabilities, as well as their inclusion in the community and society. These skills are diverse and encompass various areas of daily life, including cooking, personal hygiene, household management, orientation in the environment, use of technology, self-expression and leisure activities, financial management, decision- making, building and maintaining social relationships, and recognizing and managing emotions, as well as self-awareness. Individuals with intellectual disabilities often face limitations in their daily living skills. Although the nature of the disability plays a role, environmental factors – which may hinder the development of independence – are particularly significant. Therefore, it is important to create an empowering educational environment that provides favourable conditions for developing and maintaining independent living skills. 2. Day centres play a significant role in improving the daily lives of people with intellectual disabilities by providing a range of social services focused on developing independent living skills and enhancing social inclusion. Day centres create opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities to develop daily, social, and practical skills through real-life activities such as self-care, cooking, financial management, and orientation in the environment. The development of these skills is based on a structured and supportive environment in which clear organization of activities, consistency, and repetition are essential. Emphasis is also placed on an individualized educational process tailored to the person’s abilities and needs. Collaboration among professionals, family members, and the community is a key factor in ensuring the continuity of skill development and the application of acquired skills in everyday life. 3. Social workers play a vital role in developing independent living skills among individuals with intellectual disabilities by creating a supportive socio-educational environment for the development of these skills. An analysis of scientific literature revealed that, when supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities in developing independent living skills, it is important to adopt an individualized approach, establish and maintain constructive relationships with the individual, and develop skills in various daily activities through practical training in real-life situations. Collaboration with the individual’s family, day centre staff and other institutional professionals, as well as the community, is of great importance. Involving the broader social environment – including the participation of family, community, and institutions – creates opportunities to apply skills beyond the day centre and ensures their continuity in daily life. 4. The study revealed the realities of developing independent living skills for individuals with intellectual disabilities in day centres. It was found that individuals with intellectual disabilities lack skills in self-care (personal hygiene, dressing), household tasks (cooking, housekeeping), financial literacy (understanding money, making payments, planning purchases), as well as social and emotional skills (communication, conflict resolution, recognizing and managing emotions, and daily routine planning). The study data revealed that the lack of these skills is influenced by low expectations of family members towards individuals with intellectual disabilities and their overprotective behaviour, as well as by the nature of the disability, cognitive difficulties, and traumatic experiences. It was found that day centres develop self-care skills (personal hygiene, dressing, self- management, basic food preparation, household tasks), financial literacy (understanding money, shopping, document management), and social-emotional skills (communication, conflict resolution, recognizing and managing emotions, and working in a group). When teaching independent living skills, social workers employ various methods, including individual work, step-by-step instruction, motivating the individual, and learning in real-life situations. Furthermore, the study revealed that collaboration within the day centre team plays a significant role in developing independent living skills among individuals with intellectual disabilities, enabling team members to ensure consistent skill development and address emerging challenges. Equally important is the collaboration between day centre specialists, the individual’s family or caregivers, and the community, which ensures the continuity of skill development across different environments, provides opportunities to reinforce acquired skills in everyday life, responds to individual needs of the person with an intellectual disability, and promotes social inclusion. The study found that the development of independent living skills has a positive impact on the individual (increasing their independence, self-confidence, and social inclusion), their family members (reducing the burden of care and increasing the individual’s independence in daily activities), and society (increasing the inclusion of people with disabilities and fostering more positive public attitudes towards disability). The study data also indicate that the success of independent living skills development is ensured by creating a supportive educational environment in day centres. This includes ensuring a safe physical and emotional environment, a clear structure of activities and daily routines, positive interpersonal relationships between staff and individuals with intellectual disabilities, the use of visual aids, consistency and repetition in skill development, respect for the individual’s pace, responsiveness to individual needs, and learning through real-life situations. The study revealed that the role of a social worker in developing independent living skills among individuals with intellectual disabilities is expressed through the following roles: enabler, teacher, mediator, community educator, and emotional supporter. The enabler’s role is associated with promoting the individual’s independence and strengthening decision-making abilities; the teacher’s role – with the systematic development of skills; the mediator’s role – with ensuring cooperation between the individual, their family, and professionals; the community educator’s role – with educating the community, fostering positive attitudes towards people with disabilities, and promoting their social inclusion; and the emotional supporter’s role – with motivating the individual, strengthening their self- confidence, and supporting their emotional well-being. The study showed that for social workers collaborating with individuals with intellectual disabilities, knowledge of intellectual disabilities is essential, as is knowledge of social work methodologies, as well as analytical, communication, and collaboration skills, organizational abilities, and the capacity to motivate individuals. In addition, patience, respect for the individual, and belief in their potential are important. The study also revealed that developing independent living skills for individuals with intellectual disabilities involves various challenges, including a lack of motivation and a tendency to give up quickly after experiencing failure, anxiety in new situations and feelings of confusion, slow skill acquisition, various fears, as well as a lack of cooperation between the individual’s family and day centre specialists, and overprotective care at home. The study found that the strategies used to address these challenges include cooperation with the individual’s family, team-based case discussions, peer support, and assistance in addressing difficulties, and the use of supervision, which helps to resolve complex situations, strengthen professionals’ competencies, and ensures more effective work.
