Abstract

About the project: the phenomena of the shadow economy and corruption have been extensively analysed in the works of both Lithuanian and foreign authors. The scientific literature is characterised by a wealth of research studies analysing the factors underlying the shadow economy and corruption, and the negative impact of these phenomena on the public and private sectors. Based on the research carried out, it can be argued that these phenomena are more prevalent in Southern European countries than in the Northern or Western regions. In order to develop the most effective preventive measures, it is important to have information not only on the impact of the shadow economy and corruption on different areas as individual entities, but also on how they affect each other. The research question is therefore: how do corruption and the shadow economy interact with each other?

The aim of the project: To develop a model for assessing the links between corruption and the shadow economy and its performance in the context of Southern European countries.

Project objectives: 1. To analyse the theoretical aspects of the links between corruption and the shadow economy. 2. To identify the methodologies, strengths and limitations of the methodologies for assessing the interrelationship between corruption and the informal economy. 3. To develop a model for assessing the interrelationships between the levels of corruption and the informal economy. 4. To develop a methodology for assessing the interlinkages between levels of corruption and the informal economy in Southern European countries. 5. To empirically assess the correlation between levels of corruption and the shadow economy in Southern European countries.
