The research includes highest officials of ancient (Strategos in Athena and Consul in Rome), medieval (Doge in Venice, Gonfaloniere in Florence, Posadnik in Pskov,) and modern (Stadtholder in the United Provinces of Netherlands, Protector in the Commonwealth, Governor in the British Colonies, President in the US) republics. Including some comparative aspects, these examples generally are presented as historically connected events, advancing the last, sophisticated type of institution (President Office). Using term limits as a research option of the object helps us to find out, how ideas to separate and share power affected the development of the republic and various institutions. Head of republic was the one of most important targets, limiting and preventing its authority. Regarding the findings of this analysis, we should note that term limits were inherent to all types of republican rulers. Moreover, this feature became meaningful explaining other attributes (oath, election or impeachment) of dedicated institution in a modern republic.
