Purchasing has a direct impact upon business capacity to reduce their contribution to environmental and social problems and enhance its performance. Studies on socially responsible purchasing have been mostly executed for the public sector; however few studies have investigated social and environmental issues with the private organizational buying process. Therefore, socially responsible purchasing in private sector continues to be an area of interest both from managerial and scholarly perspectives. This article explores the barriers and drivers for private organizations to implement socially responsible purchasing. Integrally, the article presents a current discussion on varied managerial perspectives and research trends investigating socially responsible business practices in purchasing.
