The aging of society in Lithuania, as in many other countries of the continent, is the result of two causes: the lifespan of the people is increasing, while the birth-rates are decreasing. This process changes the generational proportions: the number of elderly people per one working age person is increasing. This is noticeable in Lithuania as well, although the main reason for it is the dramatic decrease in the birth-rates during the lašt decade. Since the end of the tvventieth century, the aging of the society in our country is further accelerated by the emigration processes as well: one the one hand, it is mostly younger people that are leaving, while on the other hand, the repro-ductive attitudes of the youth are changing. As the population aging process has recently intensified, we are facing a situation when the sočiai institutions, created at the time when the population of Lithuania was younger in the demographic sense, no longer correspond to the new age proportions among the population. The aging society of Lithuania encounters structural changes in the labour market, consumption, investment and savings, new demands on the pension system, the necessity to develop and optimise the sočiai services sys-tem, as well as modernise the network of health and sočiai security institutions and their services.
