Abstract (en)
Lithuania stands out among democratic states for its unusually high number of impeachment proceedings resulting in findings of gross violation of the Constitution and breach of the oath given to the state and the people. It was one of the first states in the world to impeach and remove from office the President of the Republic1 . The year 2024 was no exception: one parliamentarian was impeached for making antisemitic remarks, both during parliamentary proceedings and on social media platforms2 . This latest case highlighted some long-standing challenges and emerging questions concerning the effectiveness and integrity of the Constitutional impeachment procedure.
