It is difficult to see how some of national targets can be achieved without significant involvement of SMEs that face a number of conflicting forces inhibiting environmental change, and, as a number of authors demonstrate a range of business initiatives and projects have been developed to assist SMEs improve their environmental performance. As the economic growth in Lithuania still remains one of the most impressive ones in Europe the observed scientific problem exists in case of SMEs as the main driving force for the development of the economy in Lithuania. The goal of the article is to explore the SMEs role in Lithuanian economy. To reach the aim, law, statistical data analysis and comparison and systematization methods were applied. The research results show that SMEs are the main driving force for the development of the economy in Lithuania.
