In this paper the peculiarities of Lithuanian police officers attitude to violence against women in the family and assistance for woman experiencing violence have been analyzed. The paper aims to establish the attitude of officers to violence against women in the family; to compare attitude of different sex officers to violence in the family; to define psychological causes able to hinder officers in properly carrying their duties in respect of violators in the family. In the research 212 MRU Kaunas Police Faculty extra mural students working as police officers out of them 95 women and 117 men participated. A questionnaire of 12 questions worked out by the authors was used aiming to elucidate the respondents evaluation of various degree violent actions against woman, understanding about violence causes, officer actions during violent conflict in the family, attitude to assistance to woman who had experienced violence. The result analysis indicated that hypotheses about possible psychological obstacles which manifest themselves as not quite proper officers attitude in respect of violence against women in the family has been confirmed. Really, this conclusion is valid only in respect of interrogated men. Men officers insufficiently evaluate the heaviness of the crime, attribute more responsibility for violence to woman, express bigger unwillingness to interfere into the violent conflict thinking that that is private, family affair and also avoid starting pre-court investigation, as they do not believe in its success, most often as a cause indicating the indecision of the victim. Comparing the attitude of men and women to the analysed phenomenon one can state that women attitude is more negative, and that of men sufficiently contradictory - ambivalent in certain aspects, e.g. woman role in appearing of violence, danger of violence in the family and others.
