Findings – the research revealed that the main motives of HEIs to apply ISO 9001 and the EFQM EM are related the most common to internal institutional needs, competitiveness in the market and requirements of the stakeholders. 18 fundamental issues of the application of the means were identified which are more often related to institutional problems than to standard/model issues. The implementation of both means within academic institutions conditioned the benefits linked with internal institutional changes. The most significant general benefits are related to the goals of the means and cultural changes of the institution. Research limitations/implications – case studies publicised in English and Lithuanian languages only were analysed in the article. The inclusion of available researches in different languages (Spanish, Romanian and Czech) could provide a wider variety of the approaches in terms of the question analysed. Originality/value – experiences of HEIs from various countries applying ISO 9001 standard and EFQM EM were systemised, analysed and compared in the article.

Nors ISO 9001 standarto taikymas kokybės vadybos sistemų kūrimui švietimo sektoriuje yra ne mažiau kritikuojamas nei propaguojamas, tačiau ISO ataskaitų duomenys rodo švietimo srities institucijų, sertifikuotų pagal ISO 9001 standartą, skaičiaus augimą. Šiame straipsnyje nagrinėjama aukštojo mokslo institucijų patirtis įgyvendinant ISO 9001 standartą. Nustatomi ir analizuojami standarto taikymo motyvai, dažniausiai iškylančios jo įgyvendinimo problemos bei standartizuotos kokybės vadybos sistemos naudos. Tyrimas rodo, kad: 1) aukštojo mokslo institucijose ISO 9001 standartas taikomas dažniausiai siekiant pagerinti vidinius institucijos procesus ir procedūras ir suvokiamas kaip konkurencingumo priemonė rinkoje, 2) standartizuotos kokybės vadybos sistemos naudos dažniausiai yra susijusios su vidiniais administracinių procesų ir procedūrų pokyčiais institucijose, 3) ISO 9001 standarto taikymo kliūtimis nežymiai dažniau yra institucinės problemos.

On the basis of thorough literature analysis and the material of the European Foundation for Quality Management, this article analyses application in the institutions of higher education of one of the quality management models, the EFQM Excellence model, which becomes increasingly popular in Europe. The article focuses not only on theory of the European Foundation for Quality Management Excellence model but also on practice. The development of the excellence model is discussed, model criteria and application stages as well as best practices of the education institutions that have adopted the Excellence model are analysed. The main model application issues and benefits are highlighted and generalized.
